Working Landscapes
I have long fought to preserve and promote Vermont’s treasured working landscapes. These initiatives have included supporting the Current Use Program, creating the Working Landscapes Enterprise Fund, the Farm to Plate Program, promoting our Outdoor Recreation economy and reducing the fragmentation of our forests. Current Use is Vermont’s premier conservation program which is essential to maintaining our working land. Our policies are designed to promote a vibrant rural economy and reduce development in sensitive areas. We have supported our rural economies through market expansion and creation, helping farmers and foresters here in Vermont sell their products across the world.
Vermont’s future depends on our working landscape prospering and thriving. Vermont’s original entrepreneurs were farmers. But the 21st century presents real challenges to Vermont’s rural way of life. We need to keep it sustainable and resilient in the face of global and national pressures. I will continue to advocate for Vermont’s farms and foresters - we cannot abandon the working landscapes that have made Vermont so special.
